Footballing Glory for St James' boys team
On Tuesday afternoon the St James' boys football team kicked off their 2021-22 season with a resounding win over local rivals Redriff Primary School.
After 18 months of no competitive fixtures you could sense the excitement from the fans as they eagerly anticipated the performance to come. And what a performance it was; within the opening couple of minutes SJPFC (as we have been aptly named) took the lead from a fantastic bottom corner finish from Jordan. This goal was then followed by Zion, opening his account to make it two, with both goals assisted by our centre mid- maestro, Aiden. It was then time for our only Year 5 in the team, Senay, to repay the faith the manager has put in him. Three goals, including an incredible solo effort where he took on half the Redriff defence gave the boys from Bermondsey a resounding lead. But it wasn’t just in attack where SJPFC showed their quality. Joshua and Raf S in defence kept the Redriff attack at back and when they did get the chance, Wesam was standing tall in goal and made countless saves to keep the opposition out. Raf K M saw the half off nicely, finding himself perfectly positioned to tuck the ball away after Senay had hit the post.
In the second half, Redriff came back into it and gave St James' a bit of a scare, five quick fire goals made it a lot tighter than Coach Brenta would have wanted so he felt it was time to make some changes to sure up the team. Kai, MJ, Hamed all entered the fray and calmed any first day jitters that could have arisen. Another goal for Raf K M and a fantastic free-kick from Aiden secured St James' the win 8 goals to 6, which now sees them at the top of the table after the first week of the season.
After the game Coach Brenta said, “I couldn’t be more proud of the boys. Not only did they put on a great footballing display, but they represented the school amazingly well. Although it’s only the first game of the season, I can’t wait to see what this year brings!” The boys next game is against Grange on Tuesday.
