St. James' CE Primary School

Welcome to Year 3

Welcome back! We hope you enjoyed a restful half term break. This half term, our topic is 'Unlikely Heroes' Our main text will be the short chapter book, Krindlekrax by Philip Ridley. Philip Ridley has a wide-ranging back catalogue that you can explore with your child at home, including Scribbleboy and Zip's Apollo.

As part of their learning, the children will be creating moving monsters in DT, learning about Frederick Holmes (a genuine, local hero) and looking at rocks in Science. Nearer Christmas we'll be looking at the Chistmas story in RE too.

Please find spellings for this term below ('Spellings Autumn 2').

Please note due to the change in date of the second Legoland trip, our Ragged School Trip dates have changed slightly- please see below.

Congratulations on your excellent attendance to anyone invited on the  Legoland trip. A few pointers:

Packed lunches are needed.

Money is not (children will not be visiting shops).

Depart from school at 08:20, so children will need to arrive at 08:00.

School uniform please (change of clothes for wet rides recommended).

We have just managed to arrange another exciting trip, tying in with our learning about volcanoes and earthquakes this term.

All of Year 3 will travel to the Natural History Museum on Friday 13th October for a show: Emergency! Earthquakes and volcanoes.

Please do let your child's class teacher know if you can assist on this trip. In order to arrive at the museum in plenty of time for the show, please note we will leave school promptly at 0900 and unfortunately cannot wait for latecomers.

Packed lunches will be provided by the school.

This term, the children in Year 3 will be looking at 'The Wild'. Our main text is the beautifully illustrated tale of 'Jemmy Button' by Jennifer Uman and Valerio Vidali. We will be supplementing this with a range of other texts on a weekly basis as part of our English lessons and reading carousel activities.

Please ensure your child reads daily and that this is noted in their reading records (to be distributed). Whilst reading to an adult or older sibling is most ideal, we understand this can prove difficult. Providing they are confident reading their chosen text independently, children can note the pages they've read by themselves together with a very brief comment, to be initialled by a parent, carer or older sibling.

We will be tweeting celebrations and news from our Twitter account. Please note you will now have to follow @St_JamesYear3.

3 Norway, 3 Finland and 3 Sweden will have PE on Monday mornings.

We welcome parents and carers to accompany us on trips. Please mention it at least two days in advance to your child's class teacher if at all possible, in order for us to arrange staffing.

We endeavour to give as much notice as possible for trips, but in some cases we are offered tickets to other exciting opportunities at the last minute. Your understanding is appreciated.
